Fernando Nogueira

Fernando Nogueira graduated in Physics from the University of Coimbra in 1990. He then started his research career in the group of Joaquim Maria Domingos at the University of Coimbra, where he concluded his MSc thesis in 1993, with a thesis on Quantum Mechanics Foundations and Bell's Inequalities. He went on to work on the description of solids and clusters using local pseudopotentials under the supervision of Carlos Fiolhais (University of Coimbra) and in strict collaboration with John P. Perdew (Tulane University, New Orleans, USA). He concluded his PhD in July 27, 1999. After his PhD he did some work in the fields of geomagnetism and of molecular geometry optimization, directing 2 MSc theses in the latter field. In 2003 he became the leader of the Condensed Matter research group at the Centre for Computational Physics, devoted since then mainly to the study of the optical properties of clusters and molecules in the framework of time-dependent density-functional theory.

Current research interests include: optical properties of doped semiconductor nanocrystals and clusters, nonlinear optical properties of organic molecules, bioluminescence, pseudopotential development, and optical properties of magnetic clusters. He has directed 4 "licenciatura" theses, 3 MSc theses and 1 PhD thesis and his currently directing 2 new PhD theses. He held several teaching positions at the University of Coimbra since 1989. Currently he is an Assistant Professor at the Physics Department of the University of Coimbra.
